April PMI data signalled that manufacturing activity across Japan remained severely affected by the events following the Tohoku earthquake. Manufacturing production fell rapidly amid widespread disruption to the supply side and falling new business. Supply chain disruptions were highlighted by a series record lengthening of suppliers’ delivery times. Separately, the
government reported that industrial production plunged 15.3% in March
from February, the biggest dip since records began in 1953.
