The volume of retail sales (i.e. excluding price effects) fell by 17.0% in April 2009 compared to April 2008. There was a monthly increase of 2.3%. The large year on year retail sales decrease in April 2009 is primarily due to the large decrease in the motor trades sector. In April 2009 motor trades decreased 50.1% on the same period last year. Davy Research said heavy discounting means retail revenue still falling steadily.
