Irish R&D Public Funding: Hard science supported by few hard facts

On Tuesday, in an article in The Irish Times, Professor Luke O'Neill of Trinity College, joined an array of vested interests in attacking the McCarthy report spending cut proposals to narrow the gulf of €20 billion, in Irish public finances. The so-called "Bord Snip Nua" group, under the chairmanship of UCD economist Colm McCarthy, advocated an annual cut in science funding of  15% - - about €100 million - - and suggested that the orientation of research should be more commercial.
