In April, business conditions in the Irish manufacturing sector deteriorated at a record rate. The seasonally adjusted NCB Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) – an indicator designed to provide a single-figure measure of the economic health of the manufacturing industry – posted 44.7, its lowest reading in the ten-year survey history as it fell for the second successive month. The PMI has signalled worsening conditions in each of the past five months.
