Irish manufacturing PMI data in July signalled a further deterioration of operating conditions. Both output and new business fell at faster rates than in the preceding month, while employment continued to decrease substantially. The seasonally adjusted NCB Purchasing Managers’ Index(PMI) - - an indicator designed to provide a single figure measure of the health of the manufacturing industry - - rose to 43.7 in July, from 42.5. Although this represented the weakest deterioration of overall business conditions since last September, July’s decline was still marked.
