Eurozone unemployment rate rose to 9.6% in August 2009; Lowest in Netherlands 3.5%; Highest in Spain 18.9%; Ireland at 12.5%

The Eurozone (EA16) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 9.6% in August 2009, compared with 9.5% in July. It was 7.6% in August 2008. The EU27 unemployment rate was 9.1% in August 2009, compared with 9.0% in July3. It was 7.0% in August 2008. For the Eurozone this is the highest rate since March 1999 and for the EU27 since March 2004, according to Eurostat, the EU's statistics office. The rate was lowest in the Netherlands at 3.5%;  highest in Spain at 18.9%. Ireland was at 12.5%.
