Eurozone retail sales stagnated in February

The latest findings from Markit’s Eurozone Retail PMI (Purchasing Managers' Index) survey indicated that the sector experienced both a loss of momentum and rising inflationary pressure in February. Revenues on the high street failed to rise compared to January and, although they were up compared to one year earlier, this must be viewed in the context of severe weather in many parts of the currency bloc in February 2010. Adding to the challenging conditions facing retailers, their average purchasing prices rose at the fastest rate since July 2008 as wholesalers passed on higher raw material costs. Foodstuffs and oil-based products were highlighted as being more expensive during the month.
