Dublin City Council hikes commercial rates by 3.3%; VAT to increase next week; Four “wise men” tasked with finding public spending savings

Dublin City Council last night narrowly voted to accept a controversial budget which will see commercial rates increase by 3.3% in 2009. The VAT rate will rise to 21.5% next week while the rate in Northern Ireland will fall to 15%. Meanwhile, Taoiseach Brian Cowen will on Thursday announce the results of a public sector reform review group and the creation of a new group of four "wise men" who will be tasked with finding public spending savings.
