Brian Cowen and his “educated” Government on its first anniversary

A year ago today, Brian Cowen was elected Taoiseach and in the interval, he and his "educated" Government have been ineptly fire-fighting an economic crisis, which Ireland was so negligently left unprepared for. It speaks volumes for the vacuity at the heart of government, that the most ambitious reform proposal in the past year has been the plan to pass a law on “blasphemous libel” - - a measure that evokes writer Frank O'Connor's withering denunciation of what he in the 1940's termed: "Mr. De Valera's educated Government."
