Apple reports strong fiscal first quarter; 4.4 million iPhones shipped; Intel to shed up to 6,000 jobs worldwide

Apple on Wednesday reported strong sales its Mac computers and iPhone mobile phones in the fiscal quarter ended Dec. 27th. Revenues rose 5.8%, net income climbed 1.5% and quarterly sales passed the $10 billion level, for the first time. Separately, chip giant Intel announced that it would shed up to 6,000 jobs worldwide.
