Irish Consumer Sentiment weakened in February

Irish Consumer Sentiment weakened in February. The overall KBC Bank Ireland/ESRI Consumer Sentiment Index stood at 44.2 in February, compared to a figure of 49.6 in January. The corresponding figure for February 2008 was 63.5. The 3-month moving average decreased to 48 from the 48.2 recorded in January. The 3-month moving average stood at 64.4 in February 2008.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) plans a substantial increase in investments in 2009 as a direct response to the impact of the global financial crisis on the economies of Eastern Europe, after making a net loss in 2008 of €602 million. The bank warned that the economic crisis “is threatening to throw nearly two decades of economic reform into reverse” in the region.

Minister for Finance to exclude small Irish airports from the €10 per flight Air Travel Tax - - Donegal Airport, and Sligo Airport

The Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan, TD today announced that he intends to bring forward legislation to exempt from the €10 per flight Air Travel Tax (with effect from the commencement date of the tax, 30 March 2009) those airports that had less than 50,000 departing passengers in the previous calendar year. Currently, the exemption threshold for airports included in the Air Travel Tax is 10,000 departing passengers in the previous year. Currently it exemption will apply to Donegal Airport, and Sligo Airport.
